The Smell of Lilacs

16" x 20"   Oil on Linen

Common daily work on cattle ranches in isolated rangelands consists of long days in all kinds of weather, chasing and keeping eyes on cows and horses, branding, vaccinations, mending miles of fencing, and gates, repairing windmills, and maintaining sanity.  After a while, any ideas of romance are buried in the piles of drudge; until the mail is picked up.  Then, suddenly, the familiar smell of cows, horses, dust, and sagebrush is softened by  the fragrance of lilac water and the endearing words from a distant love.

That makes it all worth the wait.

I posed for this piece sitting up against an old post in the field on my place.   The Appaloosa and everything else in the scene came from my imagination.
