"A Warning About Woolies"

15" x 30" Oil on Linen

Cattleman-Sheepman disputes cropped up in almost all the Western States during the late 19th century and into the 20th century.  This particular event, based on what was found and information supplied by biased individuals on both sides, happened around the turn of the 19th century in Eastern Idaho in an area now covered by the American Falls Reservoir.  The cattlemen accosted the sheepherder and accused him of grazing his sheep on land they claimed for their cattle.  They claimed that the sheep ruined the land for grazing for any other animal - meaning horses and cows.  No doubt insulting and harsh words as well as threats were exchanged back and forth.  The sheepherder, his dogs, and several sheep were later found shot to death.
