Western stagecoaches, from the simple Mud Wagons to the comparatively comfortable Concord Coach, traveled at a leisurely pace.  Horses were seldom ran full out unless it was necessary.  With a wealthy passenger aboard, the chance to get some quick gold has provided a great temptation to some ne'er-do-wells and has resulted in an unexpected but necessary speed increase.  Heck. I suppose Stage Robbers have to make a living too.  But what a heckuva place to ply your trade!
