The US Army in the Southwest often employed Apache scouts, guides, and trackers for their expert abilities in finding or avoiding anything that leaves a spoor in it's wake.  No human was better  in reading signs that were mostly invisible to those who were not as familiar with the subtleties and idiosyncrasies of the canyon  lands.
