"At the Rising of the Sun"

18" x 36" Oil on Linen

East of present day Stanley, Idaho is the City of Challis and it's nested in a valley of the Main Salmon River called Round Valley.  In old times during the fur trade era it was called Canoe Point.  It was a place for rendezvous for trapping parties to set out overland or down river.  The stratified sedimentary cliffs in the background are common along the river and the land holds a wild stark beauty that can seem forbidding at first and then very rich with variety later on.  These are free trappers and they are heading up the valley to cross into the Lost River Valley and then east to Fort Hall  built by Hudson's Bay Co. on the Snake River near present day Pocatello.
