There were some natural elements that could poison an otherwise clean waterhole.  Arsenic is the main cause of many poisoned water sources.  It occurs naturally and in concentrated amounts is effective in disabling or killing the person or animal that drinks it .  Some wise traveler who cared about people and animals has left a warning for others.  Thoughtful.  I wonder how they knew.  The bones maybe?
