Every painting involves working out the composition on paper with sketches before starting the painting.  As time went on, I spent less time finishing the sketch and just roughed out the composition and drew the cartoon on the canvas with burnt umber wash.  Rarely did I produce a finished image in pencil or charcoal intending to frame it or sell it unless I was requested to.  Having said that, this is one I did - so there.
