"Crow Warrior"

5" x 7" Gouache on Illustration Board

The Crow Nation call themselves the Apsáalooke and speak a dialect of Sioux. Their mortal enemies were the Blackfeet and they made war on most of their larger neighbors to the North, South, East, and West at one time or another.  They were good friends and allies of the Nez Perce and they prized their horses like just about every other tribe did. The Nez Perce borrowed the Crow hairstyles, their dances and some of their designs and incorporated it into the Nez Perce culture.   All the tribes borrowed from one another - even enemies.  For years the Crow made Parflesche bags for trade to the Nez Perce. Their warriors were as fierce as any on the plains but the Crow were a smaller nation and depended on the protective seclusion of their lands to help them avoid raids and wars.
