This painting is best viewed if you are wearing heavy socks and cold weather gear, something these folks did not have in their wardrobe.  It's the biting wind that you feel the most.  They are heading off of the foothills and onto the plain.  Soon enough they will be in warm lodges eating buffalo meat.
