This village is located pretty near the territories claimed by enemies.  The lines were blurred somewhat because other tribes held the same claims.  So men stationed themselves in a position with an unobstructed view to insure that anyone coming in to steal horses or spy would be dealt with.  Contrary to popular belief, things did happen after the sun went down.
