"On the Backtrail"

It was prudent for anyone traveling across the country who had enemies anywhere in proximity of their route, to stop occasionally and spend some time quietly and patiently looking back at the trail they had traveled to see if anyone followed them.  A cursory glance was not enough.  It sounds paranoid, but it was in actuality a real life and death activity and was never taken lightly.
