"Stanley Lake"

20" x 16" Oil on Linen

Stanley Lake was formed during the last ice age when huge glaciers born in the Sawtooths carved out the lake and piled debris in the form of boulders, gravel, sand, and soil as moraines on both sides to create a deep lake.  It is a gorgeous body of water with good fishing and camping.  The water is so cold it takes your breath away if you jump in.  The mountain is Mt. McGowan, named for the McGowan brothers who ran cattle in the area.  The McGowan descendents still live in Custer County.
