Trapping became cold work as Autumn proceeded into Early Winter.  The beaver ponds had thin sheets of ice on them each morning and the water was frigid.  By this point in the season, the beaver have put on much heavier thick coats.  Those were the pelts that ranked as "plews" and fetched the best price.
