This Mountain Man is a solitary.  While it wasn't real wise to venture forth into the howling North American Wilderness by yourself to trap beaver, some men were better suited to their own company than the fuss and bother of a partnership.  These men were more likely to be "Free Trappers" rather than confined in the employ of a large fur trading company like Hudson Bay or American Fur Co.
