If a gold mine was a far distance from water and processing equipment, gold or silver ore was moved in huge wagons pulled by 12 to 20 mules hitched up in what was called a Jerk Line.  The ore wagons were very heavily built to stand the weight and the rough roads and trails on the way to the crusher and sluices.  Millions of tons of ore were moved in this fashion.
