This was a conundrum that faced almost all the Plains Tribes.  What was going on here?  They were advised by the Army commanders and the representatives of the Great White Father that they were not to molest or endanger these people in strange looking wagons pulled by even stranger looking buffalo.  However simple that seemed to the immigrants, the patient mien of the people who depended on these great expanses of the world for their livelihood soon grew sullen and provocative.  The frustration boiled over into some deadly incidents during the history of the westward migration.  Still, it never reached the state of bloodletting that novelists and screenwriters use to tell their stories.  In fact, it may have been a safe way to commute considering the tens of thousands of people who immigrated across the Great Plains and over the Rockies suffering not from Indian attacks but from the privations of hunger, disease, and bad luck.  That happens to me every vacation I take.
