Seasonal changes were closely followed and calculated for expectations for the coming times.  The shorter days and the geese flying in a Southerly direction generally accompanied a drop in temperature and the hint of coming winter.   Prayer using the smoke of the pipe to communicate with the spirits of the seasons and the 4 directions, Sun and Earth is the calling for this holy man as he seeks the right spot for his rites.
