"The Loose Braid"

14" x 11" Oil on Linen

When we read stories or view art that reflects Native American peoples, we generally read or see an account that revolves around the men, the warriors, the Chiefs, etc.  No doubt about it, it is a compelling subject choice.  Interestingly, for me at least, the women of the tribes were the keepers and protectors of the culture.  They were the first association a child had to identify who they were and what was expected of them.  They nurtured the culture and gave it voice and definition.  I try to honor their contributions to the world, both theirs and ours, by treating them as respected human subjects.
