"Buffalo Birds"

11" x 14" Acrylic on Masonite Panel

Nature has a wonderful way of allowing symbiotic relationships to flourish.  Buffalo Birds, also called Tick Birds or Cow Birds, were always around herds to clean up ticks, lice and other bothersome pests much to the comfort of the buffalo upon which they perched.  When the buffalo moved, they were on the lookout for insects stirred up in the big animal's wake.  In cold weather, they sunk their talons deep into the warm hair to help keep warm.  The buffalo tolerated the tick pickers very well.  Indeed it is not certain they were always aware of their presence.  It worked for both.
